The General Name File is a card index of personal names in state, local and personal records compiled by Georgia Archives staff.
Searching the General Name File: Click on the Advanced Search Search button. In the First Letter of Surname box, type the first letter of the surname you wish to search. This search will retrieve all records for names beginning with that letter. The title and target for each record has the span of names (from and to) of the cards included in that record. Each record includes about forty to sixty cards. The cards are not searchable by name. After choosing a record, click on the plus sign next to "Individual Cards" to expand the list of cards and click on a page number to view cards in JPG format. You may have to click on several cards to find the name you seek. If you wish to go through all the cards without reloading each image in the viewer window, click on "All Cards in PDF" to open the PDF file and scroll through the cards one at a time.
Note about digital collection and indexing: The cards have been scanned and saved both as individual JPGs and as PDF files of forty to sixty cards per file. Each record contains the individual JPGs for a span of names (from and to), plus the PDF files for quick browsing from card to card.
User Caution: The archives gathered the information on these cards from a variety of sources over a very long period of time. Some of the citations refer to records outside the archives and may, therefore, refer to sources that archives staff cannot locate. On the other hand, many researchers have benefited from this information and, therefore, we offer these cards "as is" in the hopes that they will prove useful.
