About this collection

Documents, encluding enlistment oaths, oaths of allegiance, discharges, and pay records, from troops recruited by the State of Georgia, either before the units were turned over to Confederate service outside of Georgia, or for units intended for service only within the state.  These records were taken from Record Groups 022-001-069, Defense Dept., Adjutant General, Discharges, and 022-01-070, Defense Dept., Adjutant General, Georgia Army Enlistment Oaths.

 

Historical Background

 

Georgia Army Enlistment Oaths, Record Group 022-01-070, consists of enlistment oaths and oaths of allegiance signed by enlistees in the Georgia Army, created in January 1861 for defensive service within the state of Georgia.  The two regiments of the Georgia Army were turned over to Confederate service, consolidated into the First Georgia Regiment, and transferred to Virginia in the summer of 1861.

 

What information can I find?

 

Enlistment Oaths include:

Name of enlistee

Age of enlistee

Occupation

Date of enlistment

Name of justice of the peace witnessing oath

Name of examining surgeon

Physical description of enlistee

Name of recruiting officer

Place of recruitment

Name of guardian if enlistee is under twenty-one (consent in case of minor)

 

Oaths of Allegiance include:

Name of enlistee

Place of enlistment

Date of enlistment

Name of justice of the peace witnessing oath

 

Discharges, Record Group 022-01-069, includes certificates for discharges for soldiers in units raised by the State of Georgia for service within the state, including the Georgia Army and the Georgia State Line.  Discharges were granted because of physical disability.  In addition to certificates of discharge, this series includes other records relating to discharges such as pay records, denials of discharge, recommendations for discharge, and affidavits.

 

What information can I find?

 

Discharge forms vary and include some or all of the following information:

Name of soldier

Unit and name of commanding officer

Name and unit of enlisting officer

Place of enlistment

Date of enlistment

Term of enlistment

Place of birth

Age

Physical description

Occupation at time of enlistment

Period during which soldier has been unfit for duty

Findings of examining surgeon

Status of discharge (approved or disapproved)

Date of discharge

Names and units of commanding officers approving discharge

 

Note about digital collections and indexing

 

These two series have been combined into one digital collection.  Documents are indexed by the name of the soldier, the date of the document, and the type of document.

 

Usage Note: Students and teachers may use images in classroom reports and presentations if the following credit line is included with the image: Courtesy of the Georgia Archives.
