The Church Records Microfilm Index is the card catalog, compiled by Georgia Archives staff, of the Archives' holdings of church records on microfilm. The cards have been scanned and saved in PDF format with one PDF for the cards for each county.
Arrangement: Church records are arranged alphabetically by denomination, then by the name of the church and grouped together in alphabetical sections, with the location after the name of the church. Churches with duplicate names are arranged alphabetically by location. Some denominations have subcategories for types of records.
The Georgia Archives actively microfilmed church records from the 1950s through the 1980s as substitutes for birth and death records in the form of baptismal and burial records, as the State of Georgia did not collect birth and death records until 1919. The Georgia Archives also microfilmed church minutes, histories and membership records. As denominations began their own microfilming programs in the 1980s and 1990s, the Georgia Archives ceased to microfilm church records.
Searching the Church Records Microfilm Index: Select the demonination from the drop-down menu. This search will retrieve the record for all cards for that denomination. Each record will have the Title target and __ Records PDF. Click on __Records PDF to bring up the catalog cards for the denomination in one pdf file. You can scroll through the cards to find the card for the records you need.
